The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given Alef Aeronautics’ flying car Special Airworthiness Certification, making it the world’s first entirely electric flying car to earn FAA certification. This certification allows Alef Aeronautics to conduct road and air tests of their flying car, which is a significant milestone in the development of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles

The flying car developed by Alef Aeronautics is a fully electric vehicle with an option for a hydrogen powertrain at a higher price. It is designed as a low-speed vehicle that can be driven on public roads for up to 200 miles and conveniently fits into a standard garage. However, its unique feature lies in its ability to launch vertically into the air and cover a flying range of 110 miles. The car is equipped with a special rotating cabin design that stabilizes the driver and the cabin during flight, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

Alef Aeronautics’ flying car, known as “Model A,” has the capability to fly forward above obstacles until it reaches its desired destination. The vehicle is designed to avoid traffic and offers a panoramic 180-plus-degree view for a safe and immersive flight experience. It can seat up to two people and is expected to cost around $300,000.

Customers have the option to pre-order the flying car and delivery is anticipated to begin in 2025. Alef Aeronautics has already received a substantial number of preorders from individuals and businesses, indicating strong interest in this innovative mode of transportation.

The certification by the FAA is a significant achievement for Alef Aeronautics and the electric flying car industry as a whole. The company’s CEO, Jim Dukhovny, expressed excitement about this milestone, highlighting that it brings people closer to an environmentally friendly and faster commuting option, potentially saving individuals and companies significant time.

While the FAA’s approval allows Alef Aeronautics to perform limited activities such as exhibition, research, and development, further safety evaluations and adherence to National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration standards are still required before the flying car can be used for commercial purposes.

Those interested in purchasing the automobile can pay a $150 deposit to enter the general line or a $1,500 deposit to have priority access once deliveries begin.

The development of electric flying cars is an exciting frontier in transportation technology, and companies like Alef Aeronautics are leading the way toward a future with innovative and efficient urban mobility solutions.
